Steel Gutter

Our steel rainwater systems are produced from premium Scandinavian steel by two of Europe's leading manufacturers, Galeco and Lindab. Galvanised is the finish most customers go for, though the range also runs to black, copper-effect and the increasingly sought-after graphite.

Demand for steel guttering has climbed sharply over the past few years, and it's become a go-to specification for architects and specifiers. Much of the appeal comes down to how much strength you get for the weight: light enough to handle and fit without difficulty, yet strong enough that the Galeco range carries a sector-leading 35-year mechanical warranty. If you're after a striking, hard-wearing gutter with real kerb appeal, steel is worth a look.

New to steel guttering?

If steel guttering is unfamiliar territory, the short introductory video below is a good place to start. You'll find more on the key features and benefits, and where these systems make sense, over in our Guides & Tips section.

Fewer fittings, less to buy

Most steel systems need a separate union to join a gutter to an angle. Ours don't. The built-in seals on the 120mm and 135mm Galeco angles remove the need for that extra union entirely. Galeco unions can also be specified with an integral fixing bracket, which brings down the number of fascia brackets a run requires. There's a dedicated article explaining why our steel gutter angles skip the extra union.

Guarantees that lead the category

The Galeco system is backed by a 35-year mechanical warranty for all colours except galvanised, one of the longest around, while Lindab's gutters carry up to a 15-year manufacturer's guarantee. We also hold deep stock of every colour shown on the site, so orders tend to ship straight away rather than waiting on resupply.

How the steel is coated

Galeco's coloured steel guttering is finished across four stages for a flawless surface. The galvanised Scandinavian steel is given a zinc coat, then a passivation layer, then primer, and finally an organic top layer. For the galvanised finish in particular, a further polymer layer containing chromium is added on top, producing an especially smooth result.

Lindab's process follows similar lines but uses five layers. The main difference sits in the outer coat: a high-build polyester paint carrying polymer grains, which leaves the surface resistant to scratches.

The fittings

Every fitting is engineered with two aims: fast installation and a clean, modern look. Galeco's angles and the unions across both systems carry 70mm-wide seals, and since every angle in the 100mm and 135mm systems is sealed, you sidestep the extra unions that steel gutter angles so often need. Unions with fixing brackets are available as well, which is rare for steel. There's also a side rafter bracket made specifically for the UK, allowing the guttering to fix directly onto the rafter.

Steel guttering near the coast

Coastal sites are exposed to far more salt water and salt-laden air than a typical urban setting, and salt can speed up corrosion of metal by roughly five times compared with fresh water. Galeco's systems are well coated and protected, but prolonged exposure to sea spray can still tell over the years, so it's worth reading our care and maintenance guide if you're near the sea.

Lindab's galvanised gutters have an advantage here: their magnesium-zinc coating is up to 20 times more corrosion-resistant than other systems on the market, which makes them a favoured choice for coastal and otherwise harsh locations. We cover gutter-cleaning routines, and material choices for coastal and high-corrosion areas, in separate guides too.

Fitting instructions

Step-by-step fixing instructions for Galeco's round systems can be downloaded as a PDF, and there's a separate set for square-profile gutters. We provide a full fitting guide for Lindab steel gutters as well.

One note for Galeco specifically: the gutters arrive wrapped in a protective film that shields the paint during transit and storage, and it's best removed just before fitting so the finished run keeps its shine.
