Cast Iron Soil Pipes & Fittings

Cast iron soil pipes carry wastewater in everything from listed cottages to high-rise blocks, and are valued for the strength and fire resistance that PVC can't match. We stock three unique cast iron soil systems — pushfit, Halifax and Mech 416 — whereas most suppliers carry only one, so you can match the system to your project rather than the other way round.

Why are cast iron soil pipes specified over PVC?

Although PVC soil pipes are a popular and suitable system for most smaller residential properties, cast iron is often specified for larger or commercial properties for a variety of reasons:

  • Fire performance — non-combustible, and it won't add to fire load or spread, which is why it's specified in flats and multi-occupancy buildings.
  • Acoustic — the mass of the pipe wall deadens the sound of water moving through it. In a converted loft or a hotel, that's the difference between an invisible system and a complaint.
  • Lifespan — installed properly, a cast iron stack will outlast the building.
  • Low maintenance — no UV degradation, no sagging between brackets over the decades.
  • Heritage appearance — passes on listed and conservation work where uPVC would not be approved.
  • Recyclable — 100% recyclable at the end of its life, which increasingly matters on specs with sustainability requirements.

Our Cast Iron Soil System Options

  • Pushfit — joined with rubber-sealed push-fit couplings rather than caulked or bolted, so it assembles by hand without specialist tools and can be dismantled and reused. Push fit cast iron is the most popular of our cast iron systems because of these benefits.
  • Halifax — a socketless system: plain-ended pipes and fittings clamped together with mechanical rubber-gasketed couplings or stainless steel brackets, so the joint is entirely dry. Its two-part epoxy coating (red outside, yellow inside) is built for aggressive chemical environments and high temperatures, and it's manufactured to BS EN 877.
  • Mech 416 — mechanically joined like Halifax, however, it is manufactured to the BS 416 standard and finished in a dark coating rather than Halifax's red. It also comes in a wider range of sizes than Halifax, allowing it to cater to a broader range of projects.

Applications of Cast Iron Soil Pipe Systems

Heritage and Conservation Projects

The cast iron soil systems are particularly well-suited for listed buildings, heritage properties, and conservation areas. These systems preserve architectural authenticity with a traditional appearance and modern installation benefits.

Residential and Commercial Properties

In both homes and commercial buildings, cast soil pipes are a popular choice due to their fire resistance, low maintenance, and soundproofing qualities. They’re also highly durable, often outlasting the building itself.

High-Rise Structures

Cast iron soil pipes are strong enough to withstand the structural stresses of multi-story buildings, making them a preferred choice for high-rise developments. Their fire-resistant properties also add an extra layer of safety to tall buildings.

Overall, cast iron pipes are a robust, durable, and easy-to-install drainage solution. They are an excellent choice for those seeking a system that combines modern functionality with a traditional aesthetic.
